A Natural Way to Remedy Insomnia
For some people who are hesitant about prescription drugs, they rather opt to use a natural medicine for insomnia. There are many natural alternatives to remedy insomnia, all available out there in the market. Some can be easily found in groceries, or even at home. Some are in pill or supplement form. However, despite having the title “natural,” people should still consult a doctor when taking these remedies. Some herbs and natural supplements still contain certain chemicals and substances that might not be applicable for everyone. One natural medicine for insomnia is valerian. This is one of the oldest herbs used to remedy insomnia. Valerian works by calming certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Valerian, however, is believed not to be addictive. Usually, this herb is taken an hour before going to bed, but it should not be used for more than 3 months. Side effects include headaches, slight nausea, palpitations, and indigestion. The problem with valerian, though, is that clinical studies of its effectiveness are inconclusive. And, just like any other remedy, it is not for everyone.
Melatonin is another well-known remedy for insomnia. This remedy is commonly taken by people who suffer from jetlag or change in work shifts. Melatonin, in itself, is a hormone naturally found in a person’s body, and taking extra amounts of this hormone can help a person fall asleep. This hormone, however, should not be taken when the person is suffering from schizophrenia, depression, and other severe illnesses. So far, there are no side-effects when taken in prescribed doses (long term side effects are still unknown). Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take melatonin, though.
Kava is another herb that can help insomniacs. Kava works by easing the body from anxiety and stress. However, kava can damage the liver. Use this with precaution, and, as always, it is still best to consult a doctor when using this herb. Food or supplements that may contain kava can also cause this damage. People should check if the herbal or natural remedies they take to help them sleep contain kava in its ingredients.
There is also traditional Chinese medicine. Insomnia, according to this discipline, comes from weakness of the kidney’s energy. Fatigue and stress are usually the manifestations from this kind of insomnia. Ayurvedic medicine, on the other hand, has something to do with the vata imbalance of the body. Vata is said to regulate the body’s breathing and circulation, and certain oils are used to aid the person here.
Other natural remedies are chamomile, lavender, hops, lemon balm, passionflower, and so on. One thing people should know is that not all natural medicines for insomnia can work for them, or if it’s even safe for them. Many, like oats and chamomile, are practically safe to consume. Some, like kava, must be consumed with precaution.
